1. There are several kinds of bunts:
a. Pivot Bunt
b. Swinging Bunt
c. Drag Bunt
d. Slap Bunt
e. Squaring up sacrifice
f. Push Bunt
g. Off the Knob of the bat bunts

 

 

2. When to bunt situations -
a. Bunts for hits
b. To sacrifice-advance the runner
c. To surprise the other team
d. When you can't hit an over-powering pitcher
e. when you can't hit a slow pitcher
f. Bunt & run situations
g. Squeeze plays

3. Defensive mis-ques to take advantage of
a. When first baseman is deep back at the bag
b. When third baseman is deep back at the bag
c. When either first, third, or pitcher is weak at fielding
d. When third baseman is left handed
e. The condition of the infield-soft or hard
f. Base coverage strategies.

4. Rational for bunting
a. To make sure contact
b. To advance a runner
c. To get on base
d. To take advantage of defensive team weakness
e. To force the defense to make a play-field, throw, catch

5. Other stategic reasons to consider to bunt or fake bunt
a. Set up a steal
b. Set up a bunt and run
c. Set up a slap-or swing bunts
d. Provide protection to runners
e. To challenge the other team

In fastpitch, if your team can't bunt, you won't win consistantly. It's the single most important weapon in this unique game. All the practice time you spend on it both learning to bunt and defensing it will pay big dividends. Try it, your team will like it.
